Mother’s Day. At our home when we were about 5 years old, my brother and I made mom her first Mother’s Day cake. After mom and dad had gone to bed, it was tiptoe to the kitchen and quiet as a church mouse, we put together the ingredients to bake her a cake. A couple hours later, it was back to bed with the cake safely, we thought, on the kitchen table. Our great big black lab, Buddy, had different ideas and all we could say was “sorry mom, the dog ate your cake.”
For two little kids, that was quite a disappointment and today, the COVID-19 crisis has created a much different disappointment for many of us. My mother-in-law, who I call my second mom is in Peru and I am stuck here. All can do is pass on my love to you Rosa, and thank you every day for allowing me to be part of the family.
On this side of the pond, our family group has “Mama Pena.” Quarantined away, we cannot visit her or taste her scrumptious lasagna. “Happy Mother’s Day Mama Pena, with lots of love from our hearts.”
Yes, Mother’s Day is usually filled with cards, candles and lots of hugs. But, there are other ways to show our love. What about the delivery of a Mother’s Day Dinner? Many restaurants have delivery for that special mom and the effort put in shows that we love and care.
There are many great ideas people have come up with, but possibly the most treasured are the moments we pause and set aside our difficulties and just tell mom we care.
Of all things I cherish, it was the times that I could call my mom and thank her for the years she gave us her strength – and for all she went through raising 3 “hell-raising” kids. My mom, my second mom in Peru and Mama Pena, are all pretty darn special. They have put their heart and souls into being mothers – and for them does that every really end?
This year, there are no hugs, but there is lots of love and kind words. Our moms have earned it and next year, being together will be that much better.
