Is Father’s Day important to you? I heard the results of a survey the other day and the response about importance was just about even with Mother’s Day. At your home, we celebrated each a little differently, but both were equally as important. Mom got the cake we always baked and a gift, and dad usually got a big hug and off we went to go fishing. Fishing was a regular weekend routine for us, and spending time with dad just made it that much more special.
I do remember one fishing trip in particular, out the salt chuck we went. This day was a jigging trip and over the side of the boat went our lines. Dropping them to the bottom, it was not long before our heads dropped too in the mid-day sun.
Snoozing and fishing seemed to go hand-in-hand and after a while, I felt this unusual pressure on my rod. It was not something that hit hard, but just sort of dragged the rod tip down. Being all of 10 years old, I explained to my dad that it must be something pretty big. He was certain I had snagged bottom, but I was convinced I had a monster on my line.
Sure enough, over a long period of time, that seemed to go on forever, up came this large red coloured fish. A red snapper my dad expressed and huge it was. In fact, it was longer than I was tall and weighed more than 50 pounds. We had a black and while picture for years of that fish with me and my dad, and now it is only a memory in my mind like all the great times I had with my dad.
My dad is long gone, but Father’s Day remains so important to me. It allows me to remember all the great times we had together. Happy Father’s Day dad….
