Synthetic or Regular Oil, that is the Question

A great question. And at Discount Motor City, one of the premier used car dealerships, Surrey, BC, we have our opinion.

Synthetic oil cost more, but lasts longer and may offer more engine protection. But, is the added cost really worth it?

For new cars, some manufacturers suggest the synthetic oils help improve fuel efficiency. We take the manufacturer’s word for it, but our advice is, consider synthetic oil only if your car has specific needs, or if you live in a harsh environment.

Where to Look?

Check your vehicle manual. Synthetic oil can cost up to 4 times the cost of regular oil, and unless your owner’s manual specifies synthetic oil, you probably don’t need it. We, however, make this statement with a few exceptions:

  • If you make lots of short trips, standard motor oil may never get warm enough to burn off moisture and impurities that can accumulate. That could hasten the breakdown of conventional oil.

  • If you live in a region with very cold winters or very hot summers, or if you use your vehicle for towing or hauling heavy material, synthetic oil helps protect the engine from strain and won’t break down as quickly as conventional oil.

  • If you have an older engine that’s prone to sludge buildup. This gunky residue forms when oil breaks down, and it can block oil passages and lead to a quick engine death.
