Do You Know the 4 Different Types of Tires?

Updated: Nov 7, 2021

Does it Really Matter?

Does it really matter which tire you use? Well, if you have changing seasons, like we do in Vancouver or the rest of Canada, it does matter if safety is a priority.

The type of tire used can have a dramatic impact on your ability to control you vehicle and at Discount Motor City, used car sales, Surrey, we often are asked, “which is the best tire for my car?” To help answer the question, here is a summary of the types of tires available:

Summer Tires

Pretty self-explanatory. These tires are suitable for summer driving with a daily temperature of 7 degrees C or above. Summer tires have a sticky compound in the rubber to help with grip and a straighter tread to help with stability and steering during cornering, acceleration and braking. Summer tires should not be used in lower temperatures as the gripping compound loses its effectiveness.

All-Season Tires

Saying a tire is “all-season,” is a little bit of a stretch. At best, a good all-season tire may be suitable for 3 seasons; Spring, Summer and Fall. All-season tires, like summer tires, do not work well below 7 degrees C, but they do have a pass in areas where precipitation is variable and snowfall or sleet is minimal.

All-Weather Tires

All-weather tire? Did you know there were two types of tires that begin with “All”? What is the difference between an all-weather tire and an all-season tire?

All-weather tires have an aggressive tread pattern with thick, chunky tread blocks to bite ice and snow for reliable winter grip and stability. All-season tires do not. They have a tread pattern designed for comfort and fuel economy: small, and smooth tread blocks that will slide on ice and snow.

An all-weather tire may be suitable for year-round use in climates like we have in Vancouver; however, if there is a trip to the mountains planned to go skiing, or through the mountains to the interior, the only tire that may be legal is a good winter tire. Before taking any trip, at Discount Motor City, the best of the used car dealerships, Surrey, we recommend you check Drive BC to confirm which tire is legal for the area you are going.

Winter Tires

The name says it all. Winter tires are for driving in winter conditions where temperatures dip below 7 degrees C. They work best of all tires in sleet, snow and freezing conditions, but trying to use them as an all-season tire, just makes them wear out.
