Buying a Used Car

Your Step-by-Step Guide

Buying a used car can be an exciting but also potentially complex process. Knowing what to do, what to look for, and where to buy your used car are all things to consider before making that purchase.

Where to Buy?

You have two choices – a private sale or from a used car dealership like Discount Motor City, Surrey, BC.  The purchase option you choose can have significant consequences.

It all comes down to managing risk.  Don’t let anyone tell you that buying a vehicle does not come with some risk.  Even new cars have problems – look at a sampling of the latest:

·        Toyota, December 27, 2023: one million vehicles

·        Chevrolet, December 23, 2023: Chevrolet EV over fire risk

·        Ford: December 23, 2023: Ford Pickup

This is just the start of the list.  There are 100’s of recalls.  To check out the extensive list, Click Here.

There are also risks in buying used vehicles, and the best way to reduce the risk is to buy from a licensed used car dealership.  Buying privately, as soon as you hand over the money, you have no recourse.  At Discount Motor City Ltd., we have heard the horror stories of people buying privately, driving a short distance only to discover their lovely vehicle has serious problems.

Buying a used vehicle from Discount Motor City Ltd., you have the following to fall back on:

·        Our reputation to uphold, and we will do all we can to make it right.

·        We offer inexpensive used car vehicle repair insurance to reduce your risk.

·        We are a Vehicle Sales Authority of BC member, which dictates how we

operate.  They offer considerable purchase protection.

Your Step-by-Step Guide on How to Buy a Used Vehicle

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you navigate through the process:

1.      Determine Your Budget - Consider all associated costs such as insurance, taxes,

registration, and potential repairs.

2.      Research - Identify the type of car you want based on your needs and preferences.

Consider factors like fuel efficiency, maintenance costs, and reliability.

3.      Check Prices - Research the market value of the car you're interested in to ensure

you pay a fair price. Websites like Autotrader.ca can help you understand the range

of prices.

4.      Decide Where to Buy - We hope you will call or visit us at Discount Motor City Ltd.  If we do not have the car you want, we are happy to help you find it or recommend where to look.

5.      Once you find the Car - Here are some things you need to do:

6.      Take it for a test drive - Do not let anyone turn on the radio or open the windows.  The

objective is to have the vehicle's interior as quiet as possible to hear any possible

problem noises.

7.      Test the radio, the air conditioning, the lights, and all other things – does the

windshield washer work?  Gently test the parking brake.

8.      Back at the lot, check the oil – is it clean?  If not, it is possible that the vehicle has not

been serviced.  What about the other fluids? Are they topped up?

9.      Vehicle History Report - Ask to see a copy of this and the Registration Papers.  Check

that the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) matches the vehicle with all the

paperwork.

10.   Negotiate the Price - Use your research findings to negotiate a fair price.

11.   Finalize the Deal – At Discount Motor City Ltd., we will do all the paperwork for you.

And you can get your vehicle insurance right on our lot: no hassle, no fuss,

straightforward and easy-to-understand paperwork.
